My Story

“In September 2021, despite my heart hesitating, my mind was consumed by a storm of uncertainty as I made the bold decision to appear for the NEET PG exam. Deep down, I knew that my true path lay in the UK. As a bright student who consistently excelled in MBBS (with distinctions), my parents were hesitant to see me drop a year. However, no matter how much I tried to glorify it, deep down, I felt trapped in the unending rat race of conventional expectations.

Considering my parents’ perspective, I decided to study for a month and took the NEET PG exam. Before I could fully process the situation, the results were out, and to my disbelief, I had achieved a score of 550. Ironically, I had secretly hoped for a lower score, as I wanted to eliminate any chance of pursuing the NEET PG path.

This stirred a tornado of emotions in me, as I had a potentially amazing seat within my grasp, but my ambitions beckoned me towards a different direction. That day, I made the firm decision to relinquish the seat and pursue what I truly wanted. I embarked on the mind-boggling journey of PLAB 1 in Hyderabad and encountered the ultimate challenge: PLAB 2. Unexpectedly, it became the most difficult exam of my life, set in an entirely unfamiliar environment.

Then, the day arrived when I received the news of passing PLAB 2. However, passing PLAB did not guarantee a PG seat, contrary to the common misconception. Now, the challenge of gaining admission into a PG program in the UK awaited me. Every medical branch in the UK has its own unique pathway for entry, providing the opportunity to apply for the branch that resonates with one’s personality. I also acknowledged my status as a fresher, realizing that it is preferable to work within the NHS for a while before applying for a PG program.”

“In just 10 days, I faced my internal medicine interview, which consisted of four sections: Achievement, Suitability for IMT, Handover, and Clinical Scenario and Ethics. With a massive 400-page book in front of me and only a limited amount of time, the pressure was immense. As I sailed through the stress, unexpectedly, I received my first job interview offer, which was scheduled just three days before my medicine interview. I felt frustrated and overwhelmed, as everything was new, and I had no prior experience with interviews. Nevertheless, I managed to navigate both interviews successfully.

However, the story didn’t end there. In just a day, I started preparing for my Paediatrics interview. Finally, all those sleepless nights paid off. I had not only received my first job offer but also found myself holding two PG offers in my hands: Internal Medicine and Paediatrics. It was an unbelievable moment for me! I finally chose the path of my dreams, and with that, I felt the burden lifted off my chest. Today, I proudly announce that I will pursue the Internal Medicine Training Programme in Leeds.

To all those who consider PLAB as an easy alternative to NEET, I’d say a resounding ‘NO’. You cannot sail in two boats simultaneously. Achieving a PG degree with the Royal College of Physicians requires unwavering commitment, dedication, and a genuine passion. It cannot be a mere option. Life in the UK isn’t just about earning in pounds and the fantasy of London. Working in the NHS is a transformative global experience that surpasses one’s mental capacity. To reach such heights, one must visualize their goals and have an unwavering commitment to push themselves beyond their limits.”

As I reflect on my journey, I'm reminded of the words of Nelson Mandela: "It always seems impossible until it's done." My journey is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in chasing one's dreams. May it serve as inspiration to all those embarking on their own journey of self-discovery and pursuit of their true calling.

With warm regards,

Dr. Shreya Manihar
